The First Nazi Concentration Camp
On January 30, 1933, Adolf Hitler was appointed Chancellor of Germany. Just seven weeks later, the first concentration camp was established near the town of Dachau, not far from Munich. The initial prisoners were political opponents, including Communists, Socialists, journalists, and outspoken clergymen, sent to Dachau for so-called "re-education." Soon, other groups followed—homosexuals, the homeless, Roma and Sinti people, those labeled "asocials," and particularly Jews
The Model Camp
Dachau Concentration Camp is often referred to as the "model camp." It served as a training ground for SS officers, who were later sent to oversee a network of camps across Nazi-occupied Europe. The SS themselves called it "The School of Terror." At Dachau, they developed a brutal system where prisoners were subjected to torture, starvation, humiliation, medical experiments, mass executions, and death.
